Bike Short Orders

We've today been advised that the new bike shorts will be delivered in the next day or two, and Melissa Nichols will have them available on Sunday at St Kilda. Please have your cash with you so we don't have to carry them over. These shorts have been purchased against your firm orders and terms are strictly cash - no terms. If you are not going to be at St Kilda on Sunday, let Melissa know via this message board or on 0419 118 893, so that alternative arrangements can be made.

We also have plenty of other uniform supplies on hand and these are available to purchase. We will not be changing our colours next year, so you can be assured that anything purchased this year will still be current next season. Speak to Melissa as to what you require.

And finally, the blue tee-shirts that have proven a winner this season are also on hand. At $20, these are a bargain and great for training or night-clubbing. Speak to Melissa or Scuba Steve.

Friday 21st March

Thats right! We're back up and running! After a long break while we sorted out technical problems on the website, we are now back online....just in time for the end of the season! Apologies to all members who have been missing the raft of information usually supplied on the website, but we promise things will improve from here on.

Just to give you some confidence that things are back online again, head to the newsletter page to check out the latest issue of NTC news. This months issue is chocka block of good stuff, heaps of reading for all.

Please mark in your diarys (I know you all keep training diarys...) the End of Season Function is to be held at Neros Restaurant on Saturday 10th May. This night promises to be a big event with heaps of food, drink and prizes. Details of the night will be posted over the coming weeks, so we look forward to seeing all members, GITers, family members, friends, enemys etc come along.

A reminder also of the club BBQ to be held next week following the Gatorade Race at St.Kilda. this is to celebrate the final Series race of the season and is a good reason to kick back and relax after a seasons hard work. The BBQ should start early to ensure you dont get home too late, so come along, and again feel free to bring friends and family along. The more the merrier!

If you have any articles or race reports you would like us to include on the website or newsletter, if you have any photos, or can give us some help in our training programs, send in your Word document to jon@nunatriclub.com and we'll post it for you.

Ironman update 3 - Shepparton Race Report

PRE RACE DRIBBLE

At first, it was the 16 weeks of pre season, followed by the 16 weeks of lead-up, then the 2 weeks of taper AND (to quote big Rexy) BANG we were off to Shepparton!!!!!

Training finished with 2 time trial weeks of 20km x 3 on rolling hills which taught the new comers a lot.

Drafting? What do you mean? He crossed in front of me I hear!!!

Sorry buddy, drop back as the rules say or your pinged!!!!

Blocking? What do you mean? I’m passing as fast as I can!!!!

Sorry buddy your out there to long, your pinged!!!!

Those 2 weeks also coincided with 2 hot Sundays (Sunday bloody Sunday I here you say) which meant we were well prepared for the heat at Shepparton.

Travelling up was pretty uneventful with all (to the Captain’s knowledge) making it up without too much trouble. The only hiccup being the condition of one of the tyres on my bike trailer. What’s a few steel radials out of the side of a tyre between friends. A quick change and we were off with a suspect spare that didn’t become an issue.

After registering we all looked forward to the group accommodation at Mooroopna.

The listing in the Telstra web site said number 228 which was well outside of town and created a procession of confused turning cars. A quick call on the mobile and no 4 was identified as the correct number. Perhaps we should have been looking for the 6’ x 8’ sign which said Mooroopna Manor!!! Oh well.

Then to book in, and being told there were 23 beds for the 24 for of us!!! (or so we thought).

A quick count and we discovered there were 22 of us, so figuring out who slept with who was the only problem, as all of the rooms were 1 & 2 beds and we had groups of 2 & 4.

Management were in turmoil and resorted to throwing yours truly a bunch of keys and told me to figure it out for ourselves, which in hindsight was the only way to do it.

After moving everybody around (the Griswalds would have been proud of me) we figured it out and it was down to dinner!!!

I’ll stop here on the pre-race stuff and only say that The Zebra, woops, sorry Chris chucked a wobbly and resolved that the group food thing would be abandoned next year, and if I ever come across Melbourne Tiger junior basketball girls again I will make sure they get no sleep!!!!

All in all the accommodation served its purpose, accommodation, not a resort!!!!

THE SWIM

Come race day and the usual nerves (and numerous toilet stops) hit, but

before we new it we were off. The water was a bit muddy but a great temperature. No complaints there, despite the pre-race rumours. The course was well marked and there were no excuses for slow times.

For NTC (sorry, Nuna Tri Club) (had to get that one in) it was-

Richard McIntyre (the quite achiever!!!!) 27.08

Daniel O’Donoghue (see there is no need to do stroke correction!!!!) 28.35

Peter Card (you’re never to old!!!!) 28.58

Steve Squire (the Phantom!!!) 30.11

Rachel Edwards(team) (great start & time to relax!!!!) 31.19

Stephen Vaughan (scuba gear? that has to disqualify you!!!) 31.34

Dean Jackson (OK so far!!) 34.28

Andrea Jackson (must have been drafting the Captain!!!) 35.10

Chris Riley (as usual, swam like a duck, sorry a Zebra!!) 36.23

Graham Dent (may be you do need to do stroke correction!!) 37.01

Mark Beovich (Mark!!! what’s he doing here!!!) 37.08

THE BIKE

Out of the water and where’s the bike!!!!!

The best laid plans I think is how it starts but it’s always hard to find that bike. Backwards and forwards and in the end there it is, just where you left it!!!!!

Left shoe, right shoe (for some socks, the hair etc etc) and away we go!!!

Clunk!!! (I think that is a word) and the rim goes hard down over the kerb and on to the road.

For the Captain the racing is over. On to the grass and change the single, 6 min 44 seconds later (yes I even got a split for my tire change so Riley could work out how much I would have beaten him by!!!) and I start again, trying to convince myself I can catch up. I have to say the crowd was very supportive and gave me a great clap (don’t get that too often).

Out on the road and the usual games with the Shepparton wind begin.

Lap 1, south easterly. Lap 2, North easterly. Lap 3 North, South East Westerly.

Yes the wind did change on laps 1 & 2 but its fair to say that I was stuffed on lap 3.

Highlight for me on the bike? Well doing a left, right dog leg and who tries to run me off the coarse (I’m sure the Sunday ride group would have a good idea wouldn’t they Graham!!!) "I didn’t know where to go" is a feeble excuse when a marshals is in front of you with a big red flag!!!!!

For Nuna Tri Club-

Richard McIntyre (the training deceiver!!!!) 2.33.37

Steve Squire (the easy rider!!!) 2.41.40

Chris Riley (not bad for one pace Riley!!!!) 2.44.02

Stephen Vaughan (This is a breeze!!!) 2.44.02

Heidi Buttrock(team) (Great ride for a socialite!!!!) 2.46.12

Dean Jackson (2.49.13 - 6.44 = 2.42.29 !!!(sorry, had to do it)) 2.49.13

Peter Card (Margie where are you?) 2.52.50

Graham Dent (where is Jackson, I'll get him next time!!) 2.58.58

Mark Beovich (Yes it is Mark!!!) 3.06.54

Andrea Jackson (Looking for more distance!!!) 3.12.20

Daniel O’Donoghue (2 all beef paddies (no new taste menu for DO’D)!!!!) 3.29.21

THE RUN

let the hunting begin!!!!!!!!

Off the bike, into the runners and we are off!!!!!

For me this is what triathlon is all about. When you can’t swim you get the opportunity to run people down and on a course like Shepparton which is 3 laps with an out & back section you can see where all your rivals (I mean training partners) are.

This year it was very hot (in the 30’s) and getting hotter all the time. Thankfully the support from the locals and crowd was great and aid stations were all 1-2 kms apart.

As usual, the high light has to be the bridge which bounces like a suspension bridge.

When your stuffed, the legs go down and the bridge goes up!!!! It’s a wacky feeling.

Splits for NTC (I’m getting tired and regressing)

Chris Riley (shocking run riley!!!!) 1.34.15

Anna (team) (lost her in the trees!!!!) 1.35.26

Dean Jackson (I'm smiling on the inside!!!!) 1.35.46

Richard McIntyre (shouldn’t ride so quick!!!!) 1.38.05

Stephen Vaughan (was I supposed to eat & drink???) 1.39.37

Steve Squire (hunted but not caught!!!) 1.42.47

Mark Beovich (relax!!!!!!) 2.03.09

Andrea Jackson (I can bend if I want to!!!) 2.07.30

Peter Card (better train next year!!!!) 2.52.50

Graham Dent (I do this for fun!!!) 2.23.54

Daniel O’Donoghue (what’s the fuss?, I'll win the lottery!!!!) 3.29.21

All in all Shepparton again put on a great race.

A BIG thank you to all the friends and relatives of the nuna tri club competitors who offered their support for the weekend and for that matter the months of training. The club tee shirts were a big success. It was so easy to find a friendly face in those moments of stress!!!

And the last word???

YES!!!!! Daniel did get a lottery place to Forster for the second year running!!!!!!

Others off to Forster-

Richard, Steve Sq, Chris, Prue & yours truly, with another couple of others still hoping for a role down spot.

GIT Practice Run

A beautiful morning on Saturday greeted our GIT 2002 program participants for their practice run at doing a triathlon. The course was at Sandridge Life Saving Club in Port Melbourne. The bay was dead flat, glassy you might say! The GIT's all completed the 200/8/2 course, pushing themselves to get a good feel for how a triathlon unfolds. A few club members turned up to try and replicate a crowd of 1000 spectators and to ensure the experience was as real as possible. A great time was had by all GIT's with an absolute buzz after the race as all competitors compared trials and tribulations. Most agreed some practice in the porpoising area might be handy as most were out of breath before exiting the water! Danny has been doing a fantastic job with this group, and now that those butterflies have been settled, the GIT's will be able to tackle their first race at St.Kilda with gusto! We are looking forward to getting another big turnout at the 2nd Gatorade Race at St.Kilda on the 15th December to support the GIT's in their first Brooks triathlon Race! Come one and all and bring your family to support the GIT's.

Head to the photos page for a collection of photos from the day.

Gatorade Race One - Elwood 24-11-02

A fantastic turnout and a great race was had by many NTC members. The cloudy but warm conditions ensured some good times. Stand out performances from Dimity, Rohan and Rod who all scored podium finishes, thus ensuring a great start to the Club Championship. The expected heat wave didn't arrive thankfully, but a few showers after the race cleared the crowds out. There are some photos of the day on the photos page and results will be posted over the next day or two.

Club T-shirts

Club T-shirts are now available from Steve Vaughan for the next week or two and then will be available from Top Gear Cycles. The t-shirts are available for $ 20.00 each and are going like hot cakes! To check out the t-shirts, have a look at the photos page. The Azure colour ensures that we stand out at races, making it easier to find club members, and to support our sponsors who support our club.

Chat Room

A reminder that the chat room is up and running, so log on and start communicating with other club members! Head to "NTC Chat" on the home page.

New T-Shirts have arrived!!

That's right, the new club t-shirts are going to be on sale this weekend at the first Gatorade Race of the season at Elwood. The t-shirts are $20 each and we hope you'll buy at least one, if not two and then out-fit your whole family in club t-shirts. The more people getting around in club t-shirts, the more the club will get noticed! Bring your money along on Sunday morning, we want to see as many members in the club t-shirts as possible.
Our club tent will be on site, look for the new NTC banner with our sponsors plastered all over it! There will be a BBQ after the race, so plan to hang around a bit and meet all the new NTC members and re-aquaint yourselves with old members. Even if your not racing, come down and support the club members who are getting out there and doing it!

No Swimming at Nunawading This Week

Please note there is no swimming this Friday night at Nunawading Pool, instead at 6:30pm we will be doing an open water swim at Half Moon Bay, Beaumaris, Melways Map 85 Reference J2. Bring your wetsuits and swim caps if its cool. Please note the carparks have a parking fee, and don't think they wont book you, as many will testify. Its best to park on the road in the parking bays in front of the toilet block. We'll meet on the beach at 6:30pm. Afterwards, many will probably head to the Sandy pub for a meal and drinks so bring some dry clothes.

Results from PB Sports Tri 17/11/02
